Full course description

The Online Teaching Certification Seminar is a fully online, asynchronous course designed to prepare instructors to teach high-quality, inclusive, and engaging online courses. Endorsed by the Online Learning Consortium, this seminar is the gold standard for online teaching preparation in our system and is often required to serve as the instructor of record for online courses.

Whether you're new to online instruction or looking to enhance your current practice, this seminar provides a deep dive into effective course design, digital pedagogy, and strategies to foster student success. Participants will explore best practices in creating learner-centered environments, designing accessible and inclusive content, and building a strong instructor presence online. Through a combination of guided modules, peer discussion, and feedback from instructional designers, you’ll gain practical tools to confidently deliver meaningful online learning experiences.

The seminar is facilitated by experienced instructional designers. You’ll leave the course with a clear understanding of how to apply what you’ve learned directly to your teaching.

Upon successful completion, you’ll earn a digital badge recognized across all four UM System campuses—a credential that supports your professional development and affirms your commitment to high-quality online instruction.

Enrollment is open now through Canvas Catalog. Choose the session that fits your goals and availability, and begin your journey toward certified excellence in online teaching.
